Workplace Safety Fundamentals
Safety is Job One
Every Canadian province and territory has Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation that governs workplace safety. For carpenters, safety is not optional - it is a legal requirement enforced by workplace safety boards across Canada. The Red Seal exam tests your understanding of safety principles because a certified carpenter must protect themselves, their coworkers, and the public.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE is the last line of defense against workplace hazards. Canadian OH&S regulations require employers to provide and workers to wear appropriate PPE. For carpentry work, the minimum PPE includes:
- Safety glasses or goggles - required whenever cutting, drilling, or fastening. Flying debris is the most common eye hazard on construction sites.
- Hearing protection - required when noise exceeds 85 dBA. Circular saws, pneumatic nailers, and power tools all exceed this threshold.
- Hard hat - required on all construction sites where overhead hazards exist.
- Safety footwear - CSA-approved steel-toed or composite-toed boots with puncture-resistant soles.
- High-visibility vest - required on active construction sites with vehicle traffic.

When using a circular saw, you must wear safety glasses, hearing protection, and proper clothing (no loose sleeves or jewelry). This is a common exam question.
The Most Important Safety Consideration
When asked on the exam about the most important consideration for safe carpentry work, the answer is proper training, PPE, and following safety procedures. Speed and cost are never acceptable reasons to compromise safety. A carpenter who is properly trained, correctly equipped with PPE, and following established safety procedures is far less likely to be injured. This principle applies to every task - from operating a circular saw (requiring safety glasses, hearing protection, and proper clothing) to working at height.
Housekeeping and Site Safety
Good housekeeping prevents slips, trips, and falls - the leading cause of construction injuries. Keep work areas clear of debris, stack materials properly, and ensure walkways remain unobstructed. Lumber should be stored flat, off the ground, and protected from weather.
