Module 3 of 10 240m 12 exam Qs

Copper Termination & Connectivity

Connectors, punchdown blocks, patch panels, termination techniques, untwist limits, and work area components.

  • Identify the 8P8C (RJ-45 style) connector as the standard for balanced twisted pair per IEC 60603-7
  • Describe the purpose and differences between 66 blocks and 110 blocks
  • Explain the function of patch panels and cross-connects
  • State the allowable untwist limits at termination points
  • Define MUTOA and its role in open office installations

Lesson 1

8P8C Connectors & Jack Termination

The Standard Connector

The standard connector for balanced twisted pair cabling is the 8P8C (RJ-45 style) connector meeting IEC 60603-7. The designation "8P8C" stands for 8 Position, 8 Contact - meaning the connector has 8 positions and all 8 are wired with contacts.

💡

Exam Terminology

While commonly called "RJ-45," the technically correct name is 8P8C meeting IEC 60603-7. The exam may use either term - know that they refer to the same connector.

Wiring Standards - T568A and T568B

TIA-568 defines two pin-pair assignments for 8P8C connectors:

Pin T568A T568B
1 White/Green White/Orange
2 Green Orange
3 White/Orange White/Green
4 Blue Blue
5 White/Blue White/Blue
6 Orange Green
7 White/Brown White/Brown
8 Brown Brown

Both standards work equally well. The critical rule is consistency - use the same standard throughout an installation. T568B is the most common in commercial installations in North America. Government and military installations often use T568A.

Termination Quality

The quality of a termination directly affects link performance. Key factors include:

  • Maintain pair twist as close to the termination point as possible
  • Seat conductors fully into the IDC (Insulation Displacement Contact) slots
  • Verify all 8 conductors are properly positioned before crimping
  • Use the correct tool - a quality crimping tool with a ratchet mechanism ensures consistent pressure
Key Takeaway

The standard connector for balanced twisted pair is the 8P8C (RJ-45 style) meeting IEC 60603-7. Maintain consistency with either T568A or T568B throughout the installation.
