Standing Seam Installation

Clip Installation and Panel Engagement

Setting the First Panel

Standing seam installation begins at the eave with the first panel positioned at the designated starting point (typically one rake edge). The installation sequence is:

  1. Install the eave trim (drip edge or gutter apron) along the eave line
  2. Position the first panel square to the eave and aligned with the rake
  3. Engage the first panel's downhill edge into the eave trim
  4. Install fixed clips at the eave and floating clips up the panel toward the ridge
  5. Fasten all clips to the purlins or deck

Clip Installation Details

Each clip is fastened to the purlin or deck with two or three self-drilling screws. The screws must penetrate the purlin flange or deck by a minimum of 3/4 inch (same as EPDM fastener requirements for steel deck). Clips must be positioned so the panel seam leg engages the clip without interference.

Panel Engagement

The second panel hooks over the clips and the raised seam leg of the first panel. The male leg of the new panel slides over the female leg of the previous panel and the clip. This engagement must be continuous along the full length of the panel - any section where the panel does not fully engage the clip will be a weak point in wind uplift resistance.

Check engagement by looking along the seam from the eave. The panel legs should be uniformly engaged with no gaps. Panels that are slightly misaligned can often be coaxed into engagement by working from one end to the other with hand pressure. Never hammer or force a panel into engagement - this damages the seam profile.

Panel squareness check:

Before installing the second panel, verify the first panel is truly square to the building by measuring the diagonal distance from the eave corner to the seam at the ridge. If the panel is not square, all subsequent panels will drift off-line and the ridge cap will not align properly. Adjust the first panel position before installing any clips if squareness is off by more than 1/4 inch over the panel length.
