CWB Standards and SMAW Fundamentals

CWB organization, CSA W47.1 scope, SMAW process, and electrode classifications.

  • Explain the role of the CWB and the scope of CSA W47.1
  • Describe the SMAW process including equipment and consumables
  • Interpret E7018 electrode classification numbering

Lesson 1

CWB Organization and W47.1 Scope

What Is the CWB?

The Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) is the national body responsible for welding certification in Canada. It administers the CSA W47.1 standard, which governs the certification of companies, welding procedures, and individual welders for steel construction.

CSA W47.1 Scope

CSA W47.1 - Certification of Companies for Fusion Welding of Steel - requires that any company performing welding on steel structures in Canada must be certified by the CWB. The standard covers:

  • Company certification - proving the company has qualified welders, approved procedures, and a quality system
  • Welder qualification - individual welders must pass performance tests
  • Welding procedures - documented WPS and PQR for every joint type
  • Supervision - qualified welding supervisors must oversee all work
💡

Exam Tip

CSA W47.1 applies to fusion welding of steel structures. It does not cover aluminum (that is W47.2), pressure vessels (ASME), or non-structural welding. Know the scope boundaries.

Division System

CWB certifies companies in divisions based on the complexity of work:

  • Division 1 - major steel structures, bridges, buildings
  • Division 2 - standard structural steel fabrication
  • Division 3 - simple structural connections and miscellaneous steel

Robotic Welding Operator Changes - CSA W47.1:25

CSA W47.1:25 introduced a major change to robotic welding certification effective February 1, 2026:

  • Robotic Welding Operator (RO) testing was eliminated - the RO classification no longer exists
  • All existing RO qualifications were voided as of the effective date
  • The replacement is Robotic Welding Programmer (RP) - a higher-level qualification focused on programming and setup

Old - Robotic Welding Operator (RO)

Eliminated Feb 1, 2026

All RO qualifications voided

No new RO testing available

New - Robotic Welding Programmer (RP)

Effective Feb 1, 2026

FW classification via Figure 35 test assembly

2-year qualification cycle

Third-party programmers exempt if program conforms to approved WPS/WPDS

The RP qualification uses a Figure 35 test assembly to verify the programmer can set up and validate conforming weld programs. Third-party robotic programmers are exempt from RP testing provided the robot program conforms to an approved WPS or WPDS (Welding Procedure Data Sheet).

⚠️

Exam Alert - 2026 Change

If the exam asks about robotic welding qualification, the answer is Robotic Welding Programmer (RP) - not Robotic Welding Operator (RO). The RO classification was eliminated effective February 1, 2026 under CSA W47.1:25.

Key Takeaway

The CWB administers CSA W47.1 for certification of companies performing fusion welding of steel. All companies, welders, and procedures must be certified. Know that W47.1 covers steel structures only - not aluminum, pressure vessels, or non-structural work. Under CSA W47.1:25, the Robotic Welding Operator (RO) classification was eliminated and replaced by the Robotic Welding Programmer (RP) effective February 1, 2026.
