What Is a Jackshaft Operator
A jackshaft operator (also called a wall-mount operator) is a commercial-grade opener that mounts beside the door on the wall rather than overhead on the ceiling. It drives the torsion shaft directly through a coupler or chain reduction system. Jackshaft operators are used when:
- Ceiling space is limited or obstructed
- The door is too large for a standard trolley operator
- High-cycle commercial applications require a heavy-duty motor
- Multiple doors share a common header area

Trolley Operator
Location: Ceiling-mounted above the door
Drive: Chain/belt/screw on rail to trolley

Coupler and Shaft Key Inspection
The jackshaft operator connects to the torsion shaft through a coupler secured by shaft keys or set screws. During maintenance:
- Check coupler alignment - the operator output shaft and torsion shaft must be coaxial
- Inspect the shaft key - the key should be tight in the keyway with no play
- Check set screws - verify all set screws in the coupler are tight
- Look for wear marks - scoring on the shaft at the coupler indicates slippage
- Lubricate the coupler and shaft key area to prevent corrosion
Coupler Failure Hazard
A failed coupler or shaft key allows the torsion shaft to spin freely under spring tension while the operator is disconnected. This is extremely dangerous. Always verify coupler integrity before any service that involves running the operator.
