Copper Soldering - Preparation, Flux & Lead-Free Solder

The Soldering Process

Soldering is the most common method for joining copper water supply piping. A properly soldered joint is strong, leak-free, and will last the life of the building. The key to successful soldering is proper preparation - the joint must be clean and fluxed before heat is applied.

Lead-Free Solder Requirement

For all potable water systems, only lead-free solder is permitted. This has been a code requirement since the 1980s. Lead-free solder typically contains tin and small amounts of silver, copper, or antimony.

Health Hazard

Lead solder is prohibited on all potable water systems. Lead leaches into drinking water and causes serious health effects. Only use solder marked "lead-free" for water supply work.

Flux Application

Flux cleans the copper surface during heating and promotes solder flow through capillary action. Apply a thin, even coat to both the pipe end and the inside of the fitting. Too much flux can cause corrosion inside the joint over time.

Capillary Action

Solder flows into a properly prepared joint by capillary action - the tendency of a liquid to flow into narrow spaces. Heat the fitting (not the pipe directly), and touch solder to the joint. When the copper reaches the correct temperature, solder is drawn into the gap between pipe and fitting.
