Leçon 1

Smoke Detectors, EOL Resistors & IDC Supervision

The Initiating Device Circuit (IDC)

The Initiating Device Circuit (IDC) connects detection devices - smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual pull stations, and waterflow switches - to the fire alarm control panel. The IDC must be supervised at all times so the panel can detect faults before an emergency occurs.

EOL Resistor Purpose

The purpose of an EOL (End-of-Line) resistor on an IDC is to supervise the circuit for opens and grounds. The resistor is placed at the far end of the circuit, creating a known electrical reference. The panel continuously monitors the current flowing through this resistor:

  • Normal condition - panel sees the expected supervisory current through the EOL resistor
  • Open fault - current drops to zero, panel reports trouble
  • Short/alarm - current increases beyond normal, panel reports alarm
  • Ground fault - abnormal current path detected, panel reports trouble

Smoke Detector Maintenance

Smoke detectors must be cleaned per manufacturer instructions, often annually or when a dirty trouble condition occurs. Dust, dirt, and debris accumulate in the sensing chamber over time, causing the detector to become more sensitive and prone to false alarms - or less sensitive and unable to detect real smoke.

Cleaning Schedule

Follow the manufacturer's cleaning schedule. Most manufacturers recommend cleaning annually at minimum. When the panel displays a "dirty" trouble for a specific detector, that device needs immediate cleaning or replacement.

Key Takeaway

The purpose of an EOL resistor on an IDC is to supervise the circuit for opens and grounds. Smoke detectors must be cleaned per manufacturer instructions, typically annually or when a dirty trouble occurs.
