CAN/ULC-S537 Verification & Walk Testing
What Is Verification?
CAN/ULC-S537 defines the requirements for verification (also called acceptance testing or commissioning) of fire alarm systems. Verification confirms that every component is installed correctly, functions as designed, and meets the requirements of CAN/ULC-S524.
Walk Test Procedure
A walk test involves one person at the FACP monitoring signals while another person moves through the building activating each device in sequence:
- Test every initiating device (smoke, heat, pull station, waterflow)
- Verify correct zone identification at the panel for each device
- Verify correct annunciator indication for each zone
- Verify correct notification appliance activation for each zone
- Test all ancillary functions (elevator recall, door release, HVAC)
Exam Tip
CAN/ULC-S537 requires testing every single device - not just a sample. Each smoke detector, heat detector, pull station, and waterflow switch must be individually tested and documented.
Smoke Detector Testing
Smoke detectors are tested using listed aerosol smoke (canned smoke) or a magnet test (for detectors with magnetic test feature):
- Hold aerosol at the detector until it activates
- Verify the correct zone appears at the panel
- Reset the panel and proceed to the next detector
- Record the result for each detector
CAN/ULC-S537 requires every device to be individually tested during verification. Walk testing involves activating each device and confirming correct panel indication, zone identification, and ancillary function response. All results must be documented.
