Commercial vs. Residential Requirements
Commercial garage doors have different safety requirements than residential doors due to their larger size, higher cycle frequency, and the industrial environments where they operate. Canadian standards address commercial doors through a combination of CSA standards, provincial building codes, and workplace safety regulations.

Commercial Control Stations
Commercial garage doors typically use a three-button control station with dedicated Open, Stop, and Close buttons. The Close button may operate in constant-pressure mode (must be held) unless monitored entrapment protection is installed.
Emergency Stop
Every commercial power-operated door must have an emergency stop function that immediately halts door movement. The emergency stop must be:
- Clearly labeled and easily accessible
- Operational at all times
- Colored red per standard industrial practice
- Capable of stopping the door in any direction of travel
Emergency Stop Is Mandatory
A commercial door installation without a functional emergency stop is a code violation and a workplace safety hazard. The stop button must be tested at every maintenance visit.
Commercial doors require three-button control stations with Open, Stop, and Close functions. The Close button may require constant-pressure operation. An emergency stop button is mandatory on all commercial power-operated doors.
